Algarve (Portugal): Landscape Series by Sunflower Books
Algarve (Portugal): Landscape Series by Sunflower Books
Is this the same Algarve', you may ask, 'as the Algarve of high-rise hotels, fine beaches and a coastline so famous that there is no need to look further?' Such is the beauty of the coastline, that few visitors look for more - but the Andersons did. They say, 'we found a countryside full of interest and beauty, quietly awaiting discovery. From flowers and fountains, hilltops and history, to windmills and water-mills, we can set your feet wandering to find them all. There are car tours, too, to get you out and about, searching out little-known points of interest-like the huge rose compass (rosa dos ventos) on the barren promontory of Sagres, where Prince Henry the Navigator founded his school of navigation, or the Moorish castle and old Roman bridge at Paderne.

But don't think for one moment that we have turned our backs on and ignored the beautiful and rugged western coastline. Wherever it is still unspoilt and free from development, we have incorporated it into a walk.'

"They are beautiful books, finest guides I have read." (M.M., Gravesend)

"We have just returned from a week's holiday in the Algarve on which we used your book to do a number of walks. I am now writing to congratulate you on and thank you for the quality of both the walks and the descriptions of them. We also used your Samos book and were similarly impressed. It is very clear that you thoroughly research your books. Many of the delightful minor paths, which you have incorporated into walks, you will not have discovered without some effort." (E.J.M., Kingsbridge)

Area covered: from the western coast east as far as the Spanish border and north to include the area around Monchique.

The best months for walking are March to May or September and October, but regular visitors enjoy walks throughout the winter as well.

Where to stay: the possibilities are endless - if you will havbe a hire car you can choose any of the coastal resorts or if you prefer an inland base, Monchique would make a good choice. If you will be relying on public transport, however, choose one of the main towns such as Albufeira, Faro, Lagos or Portimao for convenient access to buses and trains.

4 car tours, 68 long and short walks, 20 picnic suggestions

Azores: Landscapes Series by Sunflower Books
Azores: Landscapes Series by Sunflower Books
The Azores, nine islands in the Atlantic halfway between the Old World and the New, rise above sea level from a depth of several thousand metres. They are all volcanic in origin and all are covered in this unique guidebook. They are not the remains of the legendary continent of Atlantis, which is said to have sunk in the ocean once upon a time. Nonetheless, there is an aura of mystery about this lush green archipelago ... awe-inspiring mountains and peaceful valleys with abundant exotic plants, enchanting lakes of stunning beauty amidst extinct craters, charming hill country with fields and meadows, and magnificent coasts lined by picturesque villages and historic towns. This thoroughly revised fifth edition is essential reading for anyone thinking of visiting the islands, and is a vital handbook for anyone who has already booked a holiday there.

"Good old Sunflowers, those thin blue books that walkers on the Continent trust like seasoned friends from Sicily to the Azores - they never fail to find you a really good walk." Christopher Somerville, Weekend Telegraph

"We are just heading home from a marvellous holiday on São Miguel having used your book for a few walks. It has proved invaluable. The size fits into pockets easily, the maps seem accurate, and the directions are excellent.
(U.F., Cambridge)

"Once again, my wife and I have had a superb holiday using one of your books, on this occasion Landscapes of the Azores. Please would you congratulate Mr. Stieglitz on his directions, which are clear, detailed and accurate. We quickly gained confidence in this author." (P.S., Poole)

Madeira: Landscapes Series by Sunflower Books
Madeira: Landscapes Series by Sunflower Books
THE guide to Madeira for more than 25 years and a winner of the Thomas Cook Best Travel Guide Award. It really is indispensible if you want to explore the best of the island. This new 11th edition has been fully updated to reflect the many changes that have occurred since the previous edition was published. In particular changes necessitated by the the storm and fire damage that occurred in 2010 and 2011 have been taken into account in the updating of routes. The Sunday Times said: 'A remarkable paperback which may have done more than any other to change the way its readers spend their holidays: this book single-handedly turned levada-walking into something approaching a craze.'

While dedicated hikers will revel in the island's mountainous terrain, walking the 'levada' paths is one of the most popular activities with visitors. Levadas are watercourses that carry rainfall from the mountains to irrigate the cultivated terraces. These watercourses and their adjoining maintenance paths extend for an incredible 2150km/1350mi or more, but even more fascinating is their great variety. The older levadas, built centuries ago, are narrow and plummet steeply downhill from mountainside springs - really challenging walking. Their banks are covered with wild flowers, and the water rushes and foams with energy. The newer levadas are wide 'mini-canals' and run horizontally along the island's contours - ideal for easy walks. Their flow is stately and serene, and their banks are lovingly planted with agapanthus lilies and hydrangeas. Click here to see additional information about the history of the levada system in Madeira.

You may be interested to read the following comment by a user who told us that while working in Madeira in the 1950s he had explored the island relying on a pre-war map (with no guide book - there were none at that time) using his own initiative to follow old drovers and shepherds trails. In March 2001 he returned to the island for the first time in 46 years. On his return he wrote:

"It was with enormous relief therefore that before I returned with my wife last week I came across your book "Landscapes of Madeira". We were greatly impressed with the detail, accuracy and comprehensiveness of the guide and with the research that obviously went into it. May I congratulate you on the best guide book that I have come across. Despite having lived in, and visited, the Lake District over 60 years where there is a surfeit of guide books, I have not met your equal."

Best time to walk: Walking on Madeira is superb all year round.

Where to Stay: If you plan to use the local buses, stay in Funchal for ease of access to the entire island. But if you plan to hire a car, you have a much wider choice, including some good hotels in inland villages and in the mountains.
