Description

China Lake is located about 20 miles northeast of Augusta, Maine. It is a medium-sized lake at 3,832 acres and has a maximum depth of 93 feet. The lakes two basins are quite different. The east basin is rather long with an irregularly shaped shoreline and many islands. The maximum depth of the east basin is just 57 feet with most of the basin being less than 30 feet deep. The shoreline of the east basin is developed with many summer homes, year-round residences and some rental cottages. The west basin, on the other hand, has a more or less circular shoreline and, since it serves as a source of water for the city of Winslow, Maine, is only lightly-developed and human contact is restricted by law. Two public boat launching facilities are located on China Lake. One is located at the west end of the west basin off Route 32 in East Vassalboro and the other on the north end of the east basin just off Route 202 in China. The lake is well-marked with navigational buoys by the Maine Department of Conservation.
