San Luis, meaning Saint Louis, takes its name from the valley from which it rises. Nearby San Luis lays claim to being the oldest permanent settlement in Colorado and reflects the cultural heritage of early Spanish explorers and settlers. First ascents were likely by the Ute Indians and early prospectors. Routes to the summit include the Stewart Creek approach (six miles; 3,500 feet elevation gain) and West Willow Creek approach (7.3 miles; total elevation gain 3,700 feet.)
